Introducing Leslie Kyte
About The Artist
Colors make me happy, as do lines and shapes. Printmaking affords me a variety of techniques for playing with these basic visual elements, with results ranging from spontaneous happy accidents to more carefully conceived and precise imagery.
Over the past few years, I’ve identified some techniques that work well in my small home studio: monotype, collagraph, linocut, and drypoint etching. No need for an expensive press, toxic chemicals, or acids. I can mix and match these to create whatever I envision – and sometimes what I never could have imagined!
Ancient and modern art from both Western and Eastern traditions, as well as the Images that occasionally arise upon awaking, serve as my inspiration. I toss these gleanings into the pot of ‘my art’, and the result is this eclectic soup, which I hope you will find nourishing.
Please feel free to contact me with your comments and questions about my work:
lesliekyte222@gmail.
Please feel free.

Meet The Artist

Introducing Tamara Herl
About The Artist
During her teenage years, Tamara Herl noticed that she couldn’t buy into things that worked for other people. This visionary woman stance continued during the course of her 30-year career as a teacher, counselor, and coach.
When she noticed that her colleagues at a mental health center began experiencing increased difficulty adapting to the rapid changes that were taking place, Tamara developed a wide variety of services and programs to help them either thrive in the setting they were in, or break away and create new systems.
Tamara is now CEO and lead facilitator at Wild Divine Coaching and Retreats, where she offers on-site and virtual retreats, team building, and deep dive 1:1 coaching sessions. Tamara’s zone of genius is helping visionary women connect with and decipher Divine Signs from the Universe when these women lose momentum in manifesting their vision.
Wild Divine Retreat Center near Colorado Springs, her beautiful 8.5 acre property, includes a labyrinth, a sparkling stream, sacred geometry, and hiking trails.
Tamara is a speaker at local, state, national, and international levels. Her program, “Inviting Creativity & Spirituality into the Workplace” helped Prairie View, Inc. in Newton, Kansas, win an international award for spirituality in the workplace in 2007. Tamara had an article called “Finding Light at The End of the Funnel” published in Art Therapy: The Journal of the American Art Therapy Association in 1992.
Tamara is a Licensed Professional Counselor, Registered/Board Certified Art Therapist, Associate Certified Life Coach, and a Certified Forest Therapy Guide.

Introducing John Skinner
About The Artist
John is a 4th generation Colorado native, spending his youth in Woodland Park before moving to Colorado Springs.
Growing up, he spent many summers with his Grandmother, who owned a ceramic shop. He learned the skills of casting, cleaning, painting, and firing.
Later, he started working in the Airline industry and was able to travel the world.
More recently, he undertook the renovation of his brother’s home. Years of neglect left the home with needed updating and areas of damage. After repairing a badly scared wall that had an intricate paint technique, he had leftover paint. He started experimenting with the paints to see what he could create next. The first few pieces were interesting but lacked dimension. One of the many projects the house needed was a complete plumbing job. With the left-over plumbing scraps, he created a multi-dimensional piece that now hangs in the home.
Influenced by the bricolage genre, he has also created pieces using cement, sand, and metal.

Welcome Shanon Padmore Back To Miriam’s In June!

Colorado Acrylic Artist
Shanon Padmore is an impressionistic acrylic artist in Colorado Springs, SO, USA. She grew up as a youth in northern New Mexico surrounded by the Rocky Mountains in a peaceful village with wildlife and nature in abundance. Having resided in many areas of the world, Shanon covers a vast array of cultural interests. In 1980, she began her journey into the realm of therapeutic art images in California which lead to her interest in drawing and painting. Subjects for her art are angels/spiritual representations, equine, animals, pets, celebrities, nature, birds, and homages. The first inspiration for her artistry was drawing faces and seeing the emotions behind them and then pursuing art therapy. Perhaps it came more as an inner searching, a journey of self-discovery ~ a symbolic therapy. In essence, she emerged as an artist while working full time in the corporate world. Without formal art training, it became a pursuit of independent passion to learn. Shanon learned techniques with occasional classes and study in art and her work leans toward expressionistic style. The intensity of her expression began with a trip to visit The Louvre in Paris, where she recounts standing in awe among the masters of color, a fiery passion to understand the mysteries of color emerged that just had to be expressed on canvas. She reflects that her expressions may start with an idea yet the outcome always seem to take a form all its own ~ capturing life and its mystery. Her vision throughout her works suggests compassion for every nuance of life. Shanon is currently illustrating a travel adventure/spiritual book written by Gurattan Helgeson entitled, The Dollgiver. She has taught artist workshops from Julia Cameron’s book, The Artist Way.

Spring Has Sprung and Miriam’s Place Has Sprung A Returning Artist!

Nature Transformed
Artist Statement: Julia L. Wright
My goal with these images is twofold: to celebrate Nature in a unique
way and second, to waken your imagination when you gaze upon the
patterned surrealistic transformed Nature images.
A few years ago, I fell down a “rabbit hole of creativity” when I started
by isolating an intriguing section of one of my Nature photos. I would copy it
and flip it repeatedly to transform it into a patterned abstract or Kaliedoscopic
image. I have created a unique style of patterning in my artwork to entertain
your eyes and entice you to look deeper and perhaps discover a new way of
looking at your world.
Ancient artists from many traditions ritually painted repeating patterns
for many purposes. A mandala’s purpose is to help transform ordinary minds
into enlightened ones or help one to find peaceful thoughts.
All of the abstract pictures have many images hidden inside of the main
image. You are invited to take some time to focus on them and allow your
imagination to discover within them images that transmit positive energies
created by this unique view of our natural environment and that has been
transformed into a magical journey for the mind.
The coloring and activity books have fun creatures placed in fantasy
landscapes to color. The puzzles are all related to the short story that is written
above the scene these creatures will be seen in or activities they are engaged in.
My journals have prompts and reasons to use them. They have photos
or coloring pages that help to inspire you to write in them.
The decks of cards are created using my Nature photos. Some decks are
created to be fun for children to use to play “Concentration” and learn a bit about
wildflowers.

Meet The Photographer

I am very fortunate to be able to pursue my dream of being a storm chaser and severe weather photographer. Nothing else in the world compares to seeing the beauty of mother nature in person, and I truly enjoy sharing my passion with you. I love answering your questions. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
Chase With Passion!
I fell in love with the weather as a young boy growing up near Denver, Colorado. The dynamic weather along the foothills of the Colorado Rockies provided a launching pad for my future storm chasing adventures. I have photographed and chased tornadoes from Canada to Texas and everywhere in between. From the very first time I photographed a tornado, I knew that I would be out roaming the plains as long as I was able to. I am blessed with a career as an insurance agent and owning my own business allows me to pursue my passion and leave for a storm at a moment’s notice. I am also blessed with a very understanding wife (although she is my main chase partner and is becoming quite addicted to it herself) and three beautiful children.

I love color, texture, and movement. Art is like music, it feeds the soul and gives dimension to life like nothing else can. Living in the Rocky Mountains brings a jewel-colored pallet to contrast with the Ocean pallet of my soul, that’s reflected in my home.
I hope the gift that God had blessed me with blesses you with great joy!

Join Us For Art and Appetizers and a Live Stream, Tues June 15 at 5PM
It’s “Art Night” at Miriam’s Place (on the 3rd Tuesday, this month). This time Miriam’s Place is opening the atrium gallery to our community members and inviting back some past artists to share their work as we open our doors and the greater Colorado Springs community begins to return to normal. Please join us in person, if possible (link below to view the live stream later in the evening) to check out our Collective Artist Showcase featuring the work of Michelle Welsh, Travis Robinson, Kelly Klipple, Desiree Hickson, Roberta Genet and Dr. Andrew Smith.
Meet The Artists

“My name is Michelle Welsh. I was born at Clark Air Base, Philippines. I’ve lived in Japan, Texas, and Colorado Springs. I’ve experienced many different cultures and lifestyles. I raised one daughter and she is a Vet Tech, she is like me and has a passion for the Arts. I’m bipolar and suffer from depression, but art and music have always lifted me up when I’ve been down and always inspire me. I find happiness in going to art shows and concerts and appreciate other artists and musicians. In all my art pieces, I put in all my heart and soul and lots of love. Every single one is meaningful and significant to me and I always hope to inspire others. Every single canvas is a little piece of my heart, I gladly give away.”

“My Art is my sanctuary. It’s my reprieve from the Now reality I’ve
created and the jumping-off place for more. From as early as I
remember, creating and ‘playing’ with textures, papers, images, and
color mediums was part of my daily life.
After high school, I thought a degree in graphic design was logical
and went on to graduate from The Colorado Institute of Art in 1991. I
then realized I had no real interest in advertising or in the stress
of being a graphic designer.
After many years in Corporate America, I resigned to evolve my
lifework into a Practice in the Healing Arts as a Colon Hydrotherapist.
I love being a part of Miriam’s Place where I have the opportunity to
show my Art someplace besides my living room!
Please enjoy my collection which I lovingly call Shenanigans.
The inspiration for creation over the past 5 years represents
priceless epiphanies and evolution of thought, allowing me the time
for My Be-Coming. A series of mixed media altered books, also known as
art journals or junk journals, are filled with my little daily
revelations.
A Lighting of The Path for me and for you – Now and Always.
Thank you in advance for sharing your view of my world.”

“I find using a crochet hook to create with brings me peace of mind. Beyond the traditional scarves and hats, I prefer to make small items that turn into instant treasures.
I came to my talent later in life and I am self-taught. I envy individuals who can create with a brush or a camera, but I use the same motivation to create art from yarn or clay.”

“My name is Roberta Genet, and i am a licensed massage therapist. I have been practicing massage and other bodywork techniques since 1991. Prior to being a massage therapist, I was a librarian as the Queens Borough public Library in Queens, NY.
As a child, I enjoyed drawing and painting, and liked to create pictures of fashionable dresses and gowns. As i grew older, I got busy with school and college, and did not pursue my interest in art. In high school, a dog followed me home from school one day, and the dog become part of the family. Having a pet made me realize my love for animals, and for the past several years I have enjoyed drawing and painting animals. Watercolor is my preferred medium, though I have also used acrylic. Magic markers and colored pencils are also part of my arsenal of tools. I am happy to share my artwork with you. Enjoy!”

Dr. Andrew Smith, D.C. is living the principle that the healing innate intelligence of life flows from above down and radiates out from the inside, overcoming Lyme disease, mystery illness, and a hand injury as a Chiropractor. He graduated from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY with a Bachelor of Science in Art, and later from Sherman College of Chiropractic in Boiling Springs, SC. He is now the owner of Springs Back Chiropractic, L.L.C. and practices at Miriam’s Place as well as in Old Colorado City.
Join us at 4PM in person at Miriam’s Place or join us online for a livestream (https://www.facebook.com/MiriamsPlace/live/) at 5PM to meet all the artists for this month’s Collective Artist Showcase!
Please Welcome Mary Altinger to Miriam’s Place

Meet Mary Altinger on our Live Stream, Tues May 11 at 4PM
It’s the 2nd Tuesday so that means “Art Night”. Miriam’s Place is introducing you to the artist, Mary Altinger. This is her first time showing her work in a gallery setting and we would love for all of our visitors to make Mary feel welcome while enjoying her beautiful paintings. Please join us for a live interview with the artist and a virtual gallery walkthrough featuring her work.
You can catch the live-stream and participate in a live discussion with the artist at the following link:
https://www.facebook.com/MiriamsPlace/live/
Mary Altinger is a semi-retired RN/artist of abstract florals and Aspen trees. Her interests are acrylics and mixed media.
Meet Mary Altinger

My art career began when I was probably 8 years old but was brief and short-lived. I continued taking classes through high school and into college; however, it wasn’t until I began taking art classes at a local facility that my interest reignited and I really wanted to Paint.
Most of my education in the Art field has been self-taught. I began drawing trees at a very early age and found I could copy most still life in pencil relatively easily. I do not have a formal education degree in Art, I just love to dabble.
I took courses here and there in high school and college; however, my interest really surfaced after the kids moved out of the house and I began to slowly retire from nursing.
I love painting abstract florals, and, lately, I have found a passion for painting Colorado’s beautiful Aspen trees. Online courses for abstract florals, attending workshops in LA, classes in watercolor, and challenging myself with a few mixed media videos has been really satisfying for me to learn more and exciting techniques, use different tools, and learn to paint intuitively. I love painting with acrylics and appreciate the buttery texture of the paint as it moves about on the canvas. Most of my renderings are 8×10” mockups for larger pieces.
I hope you enjoy this collection!
Silvia Deen Returns To Miriam’s Place in April

It’s the 2nd Tuesday so that means “Art Night”. This month, Miriam’s Place is once again featuring the work of fused glass artist, Silvia Deen. Mark your calendar and join us for a live interview with the artist and a virtual gallery walkthrough featuring her work.
You can catch the live-stream and participate in a live discussion with the artist at the following link:
https://www.facebook.com/MiriamsPlace/live/
Silvia Deen is a nature-inspired artist that uses a fused glass technique to provide image and depth perception to her art. Her art reflects trees and their surroundings as the seasons change, as well as, other nature images.
Meet Silvia Deen

I am a Colorado Glass Artist and my unique artwork takes visual representations of Colorado’s nature.
I love trees and their surroundings, the transition of the leaves throughout the season are truly inspiring…to me they represent the eternal circle of nature…….
As a nature inspired Artist, I find beauty in Colorado’s beautiful outdoors.
My unique Glass Art includes authentic rock chips preserved in epoxy as well as various leaves and tree bark on assorted Glass panels.
Each of the pieces are individually crafted and specifically cut.
These carefully cut glass fragments are then positioned to achieve the desired imagine of trees and landscapes.
Once a picture is finished, it is heated in a kiln to approximately 1410 degrees Fahrenheit, to fuse the glass resulting in the final product.
Enjoy
Our March 2021 Artist Is Casey Chinn

Please join our Facebook page for a live-streamed interview with the artist and a virtual gallery walkthrough featuring his work.
You can catch the live-stream and participate in a live discussion with the artist at the following link on Tuesday, March 9 at 4PM: https://www.facebook.com/MiriamsPlace/live/
Meet Casey Chinn:

“I have a passion for capturing the light, texture, and forms of the natural world and conveying them in a way that makes this inherent beauty and mystery available to the viewer. I have these produced as high-quality metal wall art that will bring that beauty directly into people’s homes and office spaces. I focus my work primarily on the mountains and deserts of the western U.S., yet I find endless fascination with the natural world wherever my travels may take me. Photography has been my lifelong passion and I always look forward to exploring new aspects of this medium.
I began my formal education in photography at the Colorado Mountain College in 1982, majoring in Fine Art Photography, along with many outdoor pursuits that the college was known for. I returned to school a few years later, and in 1990, earned an Associates Degree in Photography from The Colorado Institute of Art in Denver. I have been a working professional commercial and landscape photographer ever since. My work has been displayed at numerous venues and has been valued for its technical quality, diversity, beauty, and simplicity. In 2018 I left the corporate world, having worked for a local catalog company, and struck out on my own to pursue my passion for taking photos of the natural landscape, and teaching others how to be better photographers. When not out traveling and capturing new images, I reside in my hometown of Colorado Springs, Colorado.”

New Art @ Miriam’s Place: Conception, Creation and Make it Easy
Even though we are near the end of our art show, Kelly Klipple and Amy Cook-Porter have decided to move the art around to make room for the piece, “Conception” by Hawnuh Lee. It will be accompanied by a new piece by Ashley Dickey, titled “Make it Easy” and a new piece by Kelly called, “Creation.”
Why add Conception now? The word, Conception, has come up quite often as we have re-worked Miriam’s Place’s office plan. It just felt right to add art to this planning.
What better time to encourage others to think about planting new seeds and creating new ideas than that of the full moon directly which is associated with Trees Budding (especially in the Mediterranean-type latitudes)?
It’s hard to imagine springtime, especially in the Rockies right now, when it is a balmy 24 degrees outside.
Yet this is a perfect time to nurture seeds: wrapping them in cocoons of damp paper towels and placing them in warm, dark places. Soon, they will sprout, and be put into pots under heat lamps. However, now they are just seeds, lying in wait to burst forth, nothing more.
By hanging Conception in our atrium, we hope to inspire you to plant one new seed, nurture one new idea this week. Whether or not the idea germinates is not important. What is important, is that spark of a new idea, a new action, a new dream.
Conception happens only with love, hope and faith. Ashley’s new painting, “Make it Easy” is how we make conception a reality.
We look forward to closing out this art toward the beginning of February and coming back to full activation as soon as possible.

Ashley Dickey

Ashley Dickey specializes in abstract paintings. From a very young age she been pulled toward anything creative. As she has lived in Colorado Springs, CO, her art has led her down the road of self-discovery, and self-love. Most of her work is acrylic, but has many talents such as: photography, and mixed media.

Kelly Klipple

“My Art is my sanctuary. It’s my reprieve from the Now reality I’ve created and the jumping off place for more. From as early as I remember, creating and ‘playing’ with textures, papers, images and color mediums was part of my daily life.
After high school, I thought a degree in graphic design was logical and went on to graduate from The Colorado Institute of Art in 1991. I then realized I had no real interest in advertising or in the stress of being a graphic designer.
After many years in Corporate America, I resigned to evolve my lifework into a Practice in the Healing Arts as a Colon Hydrotherapist. I love being a part of Miriam’s Place where I have the opportunity to show my Art someplace besides my living room! Please enjoy my collection which I lovingly call Shenanigans.
The inspiration for creation over the past 5 years represents priceless epiphanies and evolution of thought, allowing me the time for My Be-Coming. A series of mixed media altered books, also known as art journals or junk journals, are filled with my little daily revelations.”

Roberta Genet

Roberta Genet is a licensed massage therapist. She has been practicing massage and other bodywork techniques since 1991. Prior to being a massage therapist, Roberta was a librarian at the Queens Borough Public Library in Queens, NY.

Getting To Know Our Artist:
“Leonina, Brazilian, born in 1980, my name is Renata Maximiano and am an amateur in the art of painting. I started developing the painting exactly a year ago, when I moved to America. The exaggerated use of colors, the social and human construction of women, the inhospitable daily life, in short, my perception of this microcosm called the heart are recurrent themes in my work. Art is an intensive therapy, whose plunge is in sensation, in challenge and, above all, in the elevation it provides. Welcome to my universe!”

Our October Artist Is John Skinner

John Skinner, a 4th generation Colorado native, growing up in Woodland Park, Colorado.
He spent some of his summers helping in his Grandmother’s Ceramic Shop, where he learned casting, cleaning, painting, and firing skills.
Later, working in the Airline Industry, travel was a major part of his life.
He undertook the renovation of his Brother’s home. Years of neglect left the home with needed updating and areas of damage. After repairing a badly scared wall, one needing detailed paint treatment, John had leftover paint. He started experimenting with the paints to see what he could create on canvas. The first few pieces were interesting but lacked dimension. One of the many projects the house he was renovating needed was a complete plumbing rehab. Rather than tossing the old pipe works, he created a multi-dimensional piece that hangs in a place of honor at the house. Influenced by the bricolage genre, he has also created pieces using cement, sand, and metal.

Our May Artist is Susan Tormoen

Susan Tormoen (in her own words):
As a Colorado Springs artist, educated in philosophy at Carleton and Lake Forest College, I work in pastel, oil, and woven tapestry. Slightly abstract, I am especially concerned with color. Subject is usually landscape but I also enjoy architecture and figure.
Early on, as I was finishing my studies as a young mother, I took a few art classes. For years I concentrated on watercolor but after moving to Colorado from Wisconsin and taking a workshop with Pueblo artist Fran Dodd, I became enamored with pastels. It was the that spontaneity became characteristic of my style. I love color and the way it is possible with the stroke of a pastel stick. Recently I renewed my acquaintance with oil and the pallet knife is usually my instrument of choice. I also do some weaving of tapestry.

I want to mention that I take my own and paint exclusively my own photos. I make an exception once in a while that is true of my birds. I did not take those photos.
Also I usually paint with a pallet knife, but the birds and pigeons in this show were done with a brush.
The paintings except for 2 small pastels are done in oil.

On The Plaza I and II:
I met these pigeons in Sante Fe, New Mexico on a trip with a friend and my daughter who had business there. My friend and I spent time in the capital building where there are many beautiful works of art. I highly recommend going there when in Santa Fe. We also spent much time on and near the Plaza where there are native artists and many shops. It was there that I photographed the pigeons. I usually underpaint my canvases with red acrylic and one of my objectives in these pieces was to let the red come through.

Creek Near Victor I and II:
On the road to Victor in Colorado from Colorado Springs if one is observant they will see a creek that goes under the road. It is a rocky creek which makes it a good subject for an artist. I also like the aspen in the distance with another road going through.

North Park III :
One of my favorite places in the Windy City is North Park, a haven on the north side. I spend much time there with my daughter and grandsons. It has forest and water and is great for photo taking. I recently finished a pastel painting of one of my grandsons playing in the water with a stick. That is one reason I enjoy the place.

Fall Sunset I, III, and IV :
These sunsets were actually out my front door in their splendor. My residence faces the northwest and I have the privileged of viewing Pikes Peak anytime and of course the sunsets. The smaller one and the horizontal painting have very rich color done without the texture that I often apply. The framed painting is more subtle in it’s appearance and maybe more typical of my work.

Blue Sunset on Paseo and Palmer Park in Pastel:
These are small pieces done in a new technique in pastel of small smudges or dots showing the background of the sanded pastel paper. Another sunset on my street and a view of Palmer Park where I frequent with my other daughter and her dogs. The sky is often the main attraction in my Palmer Park paintings.

Colorado Birds I and II:
Also smaller pieces, oils, and although I titled them Colorado Birds, they are plentiful in the Midwest and know as Red-Headed Woodpeckers and Canaries.

Colorado Springs Series:
A familiar subject with most local artists is Garden of the Gods. The texture and pallet knife strokes characteristic of my usual style are more obvious in these works.

Bluebird on a Limb and Bluebird in Snow:
Another bird which resides in Colorado and also where I call home, Minnesota, is the bluebird. these paintings are done on a 4 inch canvas which can be hung in the narrowest of wall spaces.

Path with Purple:
A walk in the woods inspired this painting. I liked the shadows and how the color agreed with and contrasted beautifully with the gold of the foliage.
